Bring me back a pebble from the beach
soI may say that I have truly summered,
although I have done little else all week
but sit and watch the sheep graze in the field
and think of home,
where I no longer walk the same old streets,
nor pass the ancient tree I’d always greet,
but tread a meaner path that leads my feet
beside two poisonous, hissing
snakes of traffic.
Our old lives are forever out of reach.
Bring me back a pebble from the beach.
